Chapter Five
“Where the hell have you been?” Jared scolded an approaching Derek.
“Working.”
“Wrong. I’ve been working, and you’ve been fucking around.”
Derek shot daggers at his brother. “Well, I’m here now. What do you want?”
“What do I want?” Jared closed the distance between them and pointed a finger at Derek’s face. “I want you to stay away from Travis Mitchell and to stop sniffing around Hunter Cross. Don’t start any trouble, you hear me?”
Derek glared at his brother. “I can say the same thing about you?”
“What the hell are you talking about?” he shot back.
“I know about you and Jaxson.”
“Whatever you think you know, you don’t. And there has never been anything between us, unlike you and Hunter.”
“Stay out of it,” Derek threatened. “You are always poking your nose where it isn’t wanted.”
“You were obsessed with that man, but he wanted nothing to do with you after he had his fill of you. He moved on, Derek, and I suggest you do the same.”
Derek pushed his face into Jared’s and blew out air. “That’s not the way it went down, and you fucking know it.”
“It’s all in the past,” Jared huffed back. “Besides I don’t care how it ‘went’ down. What I do care about is this job. The only job we got after asking every farm in the county for work. Bill Mitchell was the only one to give us the time of day. He gave us a job, a roof over our heads, and a chance at a new life. No one else gave a shit about us but Bill, so I warn you, you’d better not mess this up, or we’ll have nowhere else to go. You got that, little brother?”
Derek took a step back and mopped the perspiration from his forehead with the back of his hand. “Loud and clear, big brother,” he returned, his voice laced with animosity. He turned to walk away from Jared and the conversation, but he paused to deliver one final verbal blow. He turned to face his brother.
“You were always a suck-up, letting people’s money and social position cloud your judgment. We are not like these people, and we never will be because they will always remind us that they’re better than us. Always,” he said through gritted teeth, clenching his fists to his side. “You have never understood that, and you still don’t.”
“It’s not called sucking up but respect, something you’ve never understood. The Mitchells are a good family, and Bill is a damn good man, but you are too hardheaded to get that through your thick skull. He was good to our parents when they were around, and he’s good to us.”
“Our parents? When was that?”
“He gave them jobs one of the many times they were on the wagon, but you don’t remember that, do you? You only remember what people have done to us, not what they did for us. Bill has been the one person that has helped us, then and now, so if you need your cock sucked, look for someone else to do it, not Hunter Cross.
